About this destination

Merida, "the city of gentlemen", is the jewel of the Venezuelan Andes and one of the most complete destinations in the country. Located in a valley surrounded by Venezuela's highest mountains, with Pico Bolivar (4,978 m) as its emblem, this university city combines colonial history, vibrant culture, and extreme adventure. The Merida "Mukumbarí" Cable Car is the world's highest and second-longest; it ascends to 4,765 m and offers panoramic views of páramos, glaciers, and high-mountain biodiversity. Merida is Venezuela's extreme sports capital: paragliding, rafting, canyoning, climbing, and mountain biking. Andean villages such as Jají, Mucuchíes, and Apartaderos preserve colonial architecture and traditions. Merida cuisine includes pizca andina, wheat arepas, páramo cheeses, and the famous Coromoto ice cream (Guinness record for number of flavors). The University of the Andes and the historic center complete the cultural offer.
