Margarita Island, known as "The Pearl of the Caribbean", is Venezuela's main tourist destination and one of the most recognized in the Caribbean. With approximately 1,020 km², it is part of Nueva Esparta state together with Coche and Cubagua islands, and combines paradise beaches, colonial history, nightlife, and the best duty-free shopping in the region. The island has more than 50 beaches: from the lively Playa El Agua and Parguito, ideal for water sports and social atmosphere, to the peaceful Punta Arenas and Juan Griego, with spectacular sunsets. El Yaque is recognized worldwide as one of the best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing and attracts international competitors year-round. Access is by air (international airport) or by ferry from Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná. Colonial heritage includes San Carlos de Borromeo Castle in Pampatar, Santa Rosa Castle in La Asunción (the state capital), and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Valley, patron saint of eastern Venezuela. Porlamar concentrates duty-free shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. La Restinga Lagoon National Park, with its mangroves and navigable channels, offers boat trips and birdwatching. Island cuisine stands out for fresh fish and seafood, coconut, stuffed arepas, and traditional sweets.
