About this destination
Maracaibo, Venezuela's second-largest city and capital of Zulia state, is the gateway to western Venezuela and Lake Maracaibo, the largest lake in South America. With a warm climate and a strong cultural identity, the city combines history, nature, and the famous gaita zuliana music. The Catatumbo lightning, a unique natural phenomenon in the world, illuminates the nights over the Catatumbo River basin with electrical discharges that can exceed 200 per hour. Recognized worldwide and in the Guinness Book of Records, it attracts scientists and travelers alike. The General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, crossing the bay at over 8 km long, is an iconic engineering feat. The historic center houses the Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá (La Chinita), patron saint of Zulia, and colonial buildings. Stilt houses (palafitos) in the lake area are part of the traditional landscape. Zulian cuisine stands out for patacón, goat in coconut, casabe, and mandoca.
