Los Roques has been a National Park since 1972 and is one of the Caribbean's largest marine protected archipelagos (INPARQUES ref.). Life concentrates in Gran Roque: local fishermen, family guesthouses and restaurants serving catch of the day.
There are no chain hotels or motor vehicles. The pace is island-style: breakfast at the guesthouse, boat to the cay, nap under an umbrella and lobster or fresh fish for dinner. Agencies sell authentic Caribbean experience, not mass-resort tourism.
