About this destination
Barinas, capital of the state of the same name, is the gateway to the Venezuelan Llanos (plains) and one of the most important cities in the country's west. Founded in 1577, it combines colonial history, llanera culture, and savanna nature. Barinas state is a cattle and agricultural heartland, with vast plains stretching to the horizon and rivers such as the Santo Domingo and Masparro. The historic center preserves buildings like Barinas Cathedral, the Palacio del Marqués, and republican-era mansions. Llanera culture is expressed in joropo music, cattle herding, fairs, and cuisine: llanera-style beef, queso de mano, cachapas, sancocho, and pisillo. From Barinas you can reach hatos (cattle ranches) and farms for birdwatching, sport fishing, horseback riding, and life-on-the-plains experiences. The city is also a stop on routes linking the Andes (Merida) with the Llanos and Apure. The climate is warm year-round, with a rainy season that turns the savanna into a green sea. Sierra Nevada National Park and the banks of the Santo Domingo River offer nature and recreation options.
